The Fraction Memory Game
is a web-based learning tool designed to make practicing equivalent fractions fun and engaging. Built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, this game supports fraction fluency through a familiar memory-style format. Here's how it was made — and how to get the most from it.

🎯 Why This Game?

Understanding equivalent fractions is essential in primary mathematics, yet students often struggle with recognizing them in different forms. The Fraction Memory Game uses the power of visual memory and pattern recognition to reinforce this concept in an intuitive, interactive way.

🛠️ How It Was Built

The game is built using three core web technologies:

  • HTML structures the game: cards, buttons, and layout.

  • CSS styles the interface to make it clean, colorful, and responsive for desktop and mobile use — especially when embedded in LMS platforms like Singapore’s Student Learning Space (SLS).

  • JavaScript controls the logic:

    • Generating fraction pairs for each level.

    • Shuffling and displaying cards.

    • Handling card flipping and match detection.

    • Managing timers and reset functionality.

Each difficulty level introduces more complex or subtle fraction pairs, helping students progress at their own pace.

🎮 How to Play

  1. Select a Level:
Choose between Level 1 (basic) to Level 3 (challenging).

  2. Click 'START':
The timer begins and the cards are shuffled face-down.

  3. Flip Two Cards:
Try to match pairs of equivalent fractions (e.g., 1/2 and 2/4).

  4. Match or Retry:

    • If matched, the cards stay flipped.

    • If not, they flip back — so try to remember their positions.

  5. Reset Any Time:
The 'RESTART' button resets the board and timer.

💡 Learning Tips

  • Begin with Level 1 to get familiar with basic equivalencies.

  • Say it aloud: Verbalizing (“three-fourths equals six-eighths”) reinforces understanding.

  • Look for patterns: Notice how numerators and denominators scale.

  • Discuss with peers: Ask “Why is 2/3 the same as 4/6?” — this builds conceptual depth.

  • Repeat to master: Record your completion time and improve it with each playthrough.

👩‍🏫 Tips for Teachers

  • Use it as a diagnostic tool: Start lessons with the game to check prior understanding.

  • Reinforce lessons: Assign it after a lesson on fractions as extra practice.

  • Differentiate learning: The tiered difficulty supports mixed-ability classrooms.

  • Gamify homework: Students can complete it as a fun, interactive take-home task.

  • Embed in LMS: Works great in SLS — just upload the HTML zip and go!

📌 Final Thoughts

The Fraction Memory Game isn’t just a game — it’s a teaching strategy. By blending visual memory with number sense, it provides meaningful practice in recognizing equivalent fractions. Whether used individually, in pairs, or whole-class, it’s a versatile and effective tool for any primary math classroom.
